first_imgLONDON (CMC):Ex-West Indies speedster, Fidel Edwards, will undergo surgery today to deal with a broken ankle sustained here last week during a freak accident. The right-armer, who was expected to spearhead Hampshire’s attack in the English County Championship which bowled off earlier this month, broke his ankle while playing football in warm-ups ahead of the final day’s play against Yorkshire last Wednesday. He was attempting to kick the ball when his foot got stuck in the turf, causing him to fall over in pain.”Unfortunately Fidel has had a serious break and will have to undergo surgery on Tuesday,” Giles White, Hampshire’s director of cricket said.”It’s a real shame for him, he has been unbelievable since he has been with us and has become an extremely popular member of the club.”We will support him through his recovery and look forward to having him back in a Hampshire shirt as soon as possible. He is a class act and the team will miss him.”The 34-year-old Edwards was brilliant for the club in just a handful of matches towards the end of last season, snaring an amazing 45 wickets.Hampshire on Monday announced that Edwards’ former Windies teammate, Tino Best, would be brought in as cover.last_img read more

first_imgArsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil will be out of action for 10 to 12 weeks due to a knee injury, the German Football Association (DFB) has announced.Ozil played the full 90 minutes of the Gunners’ 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday, but reported for international duty earlier this week with the complaint. He was sent for an MRI scan on Wednesday, and that has shown that the 25-year-old has suffered significant damage to his left knee.A statement on the DFB website read: “The MRI examination today at National Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt in Munich revealed a partial rupture of the outer band of the left knee joint.“The treatment is conservative, with six weeks of immobilisation of the knee joint. Mesut Ozil is likely to be (out for) 10 to 12 weeks.”Ozil has come in for criticism for his performances since his club record £42million move from Real Madrid in September 2013.But he retains the support of Arsene Wenger and his enforced absence will come as a huge blow to the Gunners boss, who has seen a host of his players beset by injuries this season.Ozil’s fellow midfielders Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta have both been absent in recent weeks, while Olivier Giroud and Mathieu Debuchy are likely to be missing until the New Year. 1 Mesut Ozil last_img read more

first_imgA survey has revealed that there has been a 218% increase in the number of people across the county looking for social housing within he past two years. The numbers waiting for social housing in Donegal have increased by 1609 in the past two years according today’s Tirconail Tribune.Donegal County Council currently has a total of 2,970 applicants on their housing list and it is a stark reminder of the bad old times of thirty years ago when mobile homes dominated the landscape as young families faced a ten year wait for a house. The Mayor of Donegal, Cllr. Ian McGarvey says that housing is the biggest challenge facing the Council and funding is very scarce to tackle the problem. However he says that while there are 2970 on waiting lists this includes 932 who are in receipt of rental supplement. He also says that many of those waiting for a house are refusing offers being made by the Council and recently only one applicant out of twelve in Letterkenny offered accommodation by the Council accepted it.The increase of 218% is in line with the national trend that shows a 13% increase in social housing waiting lists and the situation is expected to get worse. Cash strapped Councils across Ireland are battling to retain existing essential services and here in Donegal, the last Council meeting heard that unless they cut back by €3.3 million immediately the local authority would effectively cease to exist.Among the areas targeted for cuts are Roads, Machinery & RDO of the order of €0-9m to €1.2m; Housing Capital €0.05m to €0.1m; Housing & Corporate €0.1m to 0.2m; Community, Culture & Planning €0.1m to €0.2m;MASSIVE 200% INCREASE IN PEOPLE WAITING FOR SOCIAL HOUSING IN DONEGAL was last modified: August 8th, 2013 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Donegal County Councilincreasesocial housingwaiting listlast_img read more
