first_imgThe Australian High Commission in India on Thursday denied media reports that athletes from its country had behaved like hooligans at the Commonwealth Games Village. In a statement, the high commission accepted that some spirited celebrations had taken place but denied hooliganism by the Australian team.  “We can confirm that in the course of celebrations a washing machine was damaged, though it remains unclear who did the damage, what their nationality was and whether it was deliberate or accidental,” the high commission said in a statement. “The suggestion that this was a reaction to Australia’s loss in the second Test is completely baseless. Australia sent its biggest team ever to the Delhi Games. The athletes embraced India and left with wonderful experience,” the statement said. The Herald Sun newspaper claimed that Australia’s Commonwealth Games chief Perry Crosswhite had confirmed that a washing machine was thrown off the eighth floor of an Australian residential tower at the Village.  But Crosswhite said he would be surprised if the culprit was an Australian and blamed athletes from other countries who were in the Australian building at the time of the incident. The Delhi Police confirmed the rampage but said it had not received any complaint from the CWG Organising Committee.  Media reports had said that some members of the Australian contingent went on the rampage after being unable to accept India’s thumping win over the Australian cricket team in the Test match.  The reports said a washing machine, electrical fittings and furniture at the Village bore the brunt of the athletes’ anger. Apparently, slogans were also raised against Sachin Tendulkar.advertisementlast_img read more

In any case, his exit sparked off a controversy.Sunil GavaskarFrom the time the Kochi franchise was rigged up, there has been speculation about the role of a top former cricketer. Outing Gavaskar just a day before the crucial IPL Governing Council meeting at Nagpur only confirmed the top cricketer’s name. Holidaying in Dubai, Gavaskar spoke to sandeep bamzai on the eve of the ipl Governing Council meeting about his actual involvement with the Kochi franchise. Excerpts:Q. What is the extent of your involvement with the controversial Kochi franchise of the IPL?A. This is not the first time I have been approached by a potential franchise. In the past too there have been several approaches to help on the cricketing aspect but nothing actually materialised.Q. Has a formal offer been made to you by the Gaekwads?A. Till I get a formal offer in writing, it is just like all previous approaches made to me. It is only after a formal written approach is made that I will be in a position to answer questions about monetary aspects and any stake in the franchise. Of course, before that we have to wait for the BCCI’s decision on the matter of retaining the franchise or not.Q. Why did you quit from the Governing Council after being an integral member of the executive from the beginning?advertisementA. I opted out because I feel like Tiger Pataudi that since the IPL is a commercial enterprise, those who give their expertise, experience, inputs and time should be remunerated. You are aware that I have been a coach and consultant for the Indian team in the past and did not ask for nor got a rupee for doing so. I thought it was my duty to do so for what Indian cricket has given me and I will still do so if asked. But the IPL is a commercial enterprise.last_img read more

first_imgNew Zealand beat Zimbabwe by 10 wickets in their World Cup Group A match at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad, on Friday. Score Barring experienced opener Brendan Taylor, who top scored with 44 (57 balls, 4×4) and rearguard action from Prosper Utseya (36) and Graeme Cremer (22), the top-order batsmen put up an insipid show to leave Zimbabwe tottering at 89 for 7 after 27 overs on a strip that was good for batting.Apart from Taylor, who was the sixth batsman to be dismissed, only Craig Irvine (11) got into double figures among the top six against a determined and efficient New Zealand. The Black Caps’ bowling was backed up by some splendid fielding.Former captain Utseya who made 36 in 65 balls with the help of 3 boundaries showed more gumption than their more accomplished front-line batsmen barring Taylor.Zimbabweans added 40 runs for the last two wickets as New Zealand were left to score the runs at an asking rate of 3.26.In their six head-to-head meetings, New Zealand have won five times while one match didn’t yield any result.Zimbabwe, opted to bat first received an early jolt when opener Charles Coventry was run out for a duck in the second over of the day.Coventry drove a Tim Southee delivery to mid-on and set off for quick single. However Hamish Bennett showed brilliant anticipation as he hit the stumps with a smart under-arm throw as Coventry was still short of his ground. The New Zealand bowlers then stuck to a disciplined line as the batsmen found it difficult to score runs. As Zimbabwe batsmen perished due to poor shot selection, it was Taylor who showed a lot of common sense in his approach before he was adjudged leg before off Scott Styris.Wickets fell at regular intervals. Tatenda Taibu, who scored a fine 98 in their 175-run victory over Canada, was trapped leg before by an in-cutter from Southee as the batsman tried to play it down the leg-side. The wicket-keeper made just 8 in 18 balls.Inside 25 overs, more than half of the side were back in the hut as Daniel Vettori’s men had firm grip over the proceedings.New Zealand skipper Vettori grabbed two wickets in the space of three deliveries in his very first over to leave Zimababwe tottering at 46 for 5 inside of the first two Powerplays.Prior to that Kyle Mills, had sent back Craig Ervine as the batsman slashed one straight to Jesse Ryder standing at backward point. Mills (two for 29) returned to the side to play his first match in the World Cup after recovering from his back injury that forced him to miss action for one month.advertisement- With PTI inputslast_img read more

first_imgIndia is lucky to have a “stable” captain like Mahendra Singh Dhoni, according to Pakistan’s ODI skipper Shahid Afridi who is still trying to play down his negative remarks against Indians that caused an uproar.”I thought Dhoni led the Indians very shrewdly and performed brilliantly in the final. But I also hope the World Cup coming back to Asia will also boost the sport in this region again and normalise bilateral Indo-Pak cricket relations,” he said.Afridi acknowledged that India were the better side on that day and deserved to win the World Cup.”They were the better side and deserved to win the world cup. Any side that can beat us should win the World Cup,” he said.Afridi heaped praise on Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar, saying that his hunger for runs is amazing and he still has plenty to offer to Indian cricket.”His hunger for runs is amazing and only he can best decide what he wants to do in the future. But I can tell you this age is no bar to his success in either Tests or one-day internationals,” he said.Afridi said he did not have any words to describe the Indian maestro and disclosed that he has a framed jersey autographed by Tendulkar in his drawing room.advertisementThe Pakistan captain once again played down his negative remarks about Indian people that he made on a Pakistani television channel talk show that has caused an uproar in the neighboring country.”I have nothing against the Indian people and I have always enjoyed going to India as the people there appreciate and support good cricket and players,” Afridi said.”The remarks I made on the show have been misunderstood and taken out of context. My main emphasis was that sports should not be mixed with politics and there were some elements who didn’t want the people of the two countries to get closer,” Afridi clarified.”It is unfortunate whenever someone tries to bring politics into sport. This is unacceptable and will only lead to misunderstandings,” he said.Afridi’s remarks about the Indian media being negative about Indo-Pak relations and the Pakistani media being 100 times better have also caused a furore.”I don’t want to sound condescending but I have always wanted good relations between the two countries and I have in my own way tried to play a positive role,” he said.”Even when we returned from India after playing the world cup semifinal in Mohali I said that Pakistanis should not treat cricket matches with India as war as in other things we tend to have common interests,” Afridi noted.Afridi pointed out that there were some elements in the Indian media who created misunderstandings or demeaned Pakistanis.”Even when I said that Sachin Tendulkar would have to wait for his 100th century after the semifinal against us, my remarks were misinterpreted and played up negatively by some in the Indian media.”I admire Sachin Tendulkar for being one of the best role models for young cricketers and no one in Pakistan even doubts his greatness as his record speak for himself.”All I had meant was that being the captain of the opposing team, we would not allow Tendulkar to score runs or get a century against us which any opposing captain would say about an opposing batsman,” Afridi explained. The Pakistan captain said the national team had gone to India with the message of peace.”I think our conduct in the semifinal and during our stay in India is proof enough of our intentions. Pakistan has always been keen to have normal cricket relations with India,” he said.”I still say Pakistan and India should have normal bilateral relations in cricket and there should be regular exchanges between the two countries,” he added.Afridi explained that his remarks on the talk show were in response to a question about how the Indians were looking at the semifinal match result and about some people introducing politics into cricket with Pakistan.”There are positive people even in the Indian media but recently in India we as a team were sad over the way some sections of the Indian media did stories about us and how they portrayed us,” Afridi said.advertisementHe said because of these negative elements, Pakistani players remained out of the Indian Premier League.”When you play a cricket match with India, the intensity level is high but that is only on the field and it is unfortunate when a wrong colour is given to a match or relations between players.”Afridi said cricket can bring the two countries closer and it was a very positive gesture on part of the Indian Prime Minister to invite his Pakistani counterpart to Mohali for the match.”I know for a fact that Pakistanis who were in Mohali for the match enjoyed themselves thoroughly and were looked after well even though the disappointment of losing the semifinal was great,” he noted.last_img read more

first_imgTamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Tuesday sought Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s resignation, accusing him of securing a fraudulent victory in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. “Chidambaram’s tenure as minister is untenable. He should resign. All the votes that he won were actually won by my candidate. He was never elected to Parliament in first place. He has done a fraud on the nation,” Jayalalithaa said at a press conference after meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Chidambaram, who was trailing his nearest rival for most of the counting, was eventually declared elected from Sivaganga constituency in Tamil Nadu. A case against his election is pending in the Supreme Court.During her meeting with the prime minister, Jayalalithaa presented a list of demands for her state and ruled out any move to join the UPA. “At present, the Congress and the DMK are allies. In such a situation, it is inappropriate for me to call Congress president Sonia Gandhi,” Jayalalithaa said on her first visit to Delhi after her assembly poll win.The AIADMK chief said she was keen to maintain friendly relations with the Centre and hoped for assistance on several state projects, including an additional 1000 MW of power from the central grid.Asked about several DMK leaders being mired in the 2G scam probe, Jayalalithaa launded the role of the judiciary in pushing the investigation. “The action taken by the Supreme Court in the 2G scam has restored my faith in the judiciary,” she said. The AIADMK chief reiterated her demand for the resignation of Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran, who is accused of irregularities in the 2G scam. “The prime minister must remove Maran if he does not step down,” she said.advertisementJayalalithaa’s two-day trip to Delhi had raised speculation that the Congress and the AIADMK were warming up to each other. On Monday, the first day of her trip to Delhi, many politicians paid Jayalalithaa a visit. Among them were Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad and CPI leader D. first_imgIf numbers are anything to go by, the 20th edition of the Delhi Book Fair is witnessing a dramatic comeback of the iconic Indian comic character, Chacha Chaudhary, whose creator Pran Kumar Sharma died recently. Our stall has seen an unprecedented footfall over the last few days and we have already sold more than three thousand copies of the Chacha Chaudhary series, Gulshan Rai, publisher, Diamond Comics, told PTI.In what could be called a fitting tribute, Diamond Comics has also republished all the early editions of the series and released them at their original price, effectively leading to a huge discount.People visiting the fair could be seen lapping up the opportunity to purchase these comic books, with the Diamond Comics stall swarming with buyers cutting across the age spectrum, giving credence to the publisher’s claim. “I remember fighting with my siblings over who would read the comic first. Such was the craze that even during exams, I used to keep those comics underneath my textbooks, all the while pretending that I was studying,” said Rachita Arora, a homemaker, taking a trip down memory lane at the Fair. The Chacha Chaudhary comic is available in 10 languages.”The diminutive ‘Chacha’, with a brain sharper than a needle and faster than a super-computer, once had a ubiquitous presence in many Indian homes. But like other indigenous comic characters, ‘Chacha’ too faded away from public memory owing to multiple distractions,” Rachita added.Shivani Gupta, an avowed fan of the endearing character, said, My son remains glued to the television watching shows like ‘Chhota Bheem’ when he is not busy fiddling with an app or the other on the phone. I am buying a few copies of Chacha Chaudhury, just to inculcate the habit of reading in him.advertisementMeanwhile, Chacha Chaudhary fans might be able to possess some collectors’ items through a deal announced by the online shopping site Groupon India. Pran imagined Chacha a middle class frail but highly intelligent old man. He always sported a bushy bristling white mustache and a trademark red pagadi.A wooden stick, a pocket watch and a waistcoat with a double inside pocket are also some of Chacha’s wardrobe staples. Wife Bini (Chachi), a faithful street dog Rocket and a giant called Sabu who is his sidekick are what Pran gave Chacha as his household members. The Chacha Chaudhary comic is available in 10 languages.last_img read more
